Fatwood is the heartwood of pine trees. It occurs naturally and is the resin-impregnated heartwood found in the stumps of downed trees and in the joint or intersection area of a limb to the trunk. This hard, rot-resistant heartwood lights fast and burns hot. This makes it and excellent product to start fires. The pitch soaked wood produces an oily, sooty smoke, and it is recommended to wait until all fatwood used to start a fire is completely burned before cooking on the fire. The smoke from fatwood is an excellent mosquito repellent, tho it is usually not marketed as such. Fatwood is a source of raw material in the commercial production of turpentine.
